The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) is pleased to announce Kurt Shickman as this year’s recipient of the Marty Hastings Award. The award was presented to Shickman during the CRRC Annual Meeting on June 11, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Shickman has been an outstanding volunteer and valued contributor to the CRRC for over a decade, during which time he has served on the Board of Directors (appointed to fill a vacant seat in 2017 and elected by the Membership in 2019) and taken on leadership roles on the Education Committee (current Chair, member since 2021); International Committee (current Vice Chair, member since 2024); and Ratings, Codes, & Standards Committee (former Interim Chair, member since 2020). He previously served as a voting member on the Technical Committee and on multiple CRRC S100 Consensus Bodies; is an authorized CRRC Educator; and is a Board-approved delegate to India for the CRRC.

Mr. Shickman’s ongoing commitment to the CRRC is marked by respect, integrity, and a willingness to roll up his sleeves and contribute—no matter how big or small the task. Shickman’s nominators, who are kept confidential, stated that he is “articulate, balanced with great integrity, experienced and extremely knowledgeable, and is always respectful even when expressing a different opinion.” He is “an indefatigable volunteer, often willing to step up when no one else does,” and “I can personally attest to his hard work and commitment to the organization. He is responsive to emails, provides thoughtful feedback, and is respectful toward other committee members, directors, and staff.” For these reasons and more, Shickman is deserving of the Marty Hastings Award.

As part of this prestigious award, the CRRC has made a donation in Shickman’s name to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute’s (EESI) Future Climate Leaders Scholarship Fund. Each academic year, EESI awards scholarships to three undergraduate students pursuing studies relevant to environmental, clean energy, and climate policy at a Historically Black college or university (HBCU) in the Mid-Atlantic or Southern region of the U.S.

The CRRC Board of Directors created the Marty Hastings Award in honor of the longtime Board member, Treasurer, and Technical Committee member who passed away in 2011. Hastings contributed greatly to the CRRC and is fondly remembered for his upbeat attitude, enthusiasm, and sense of humor. To commemorate Hastings’ contributions to the organization, the CRRC created this annual award presented to a volunteer who has made outstanding contributions to the CRRC. Nominations for the award are solicited from the CRRC Membership, and the recipient is selected by a Board-level committee. The award includes a $500 donation made in the recipient’s name to a charitable organization of their choice. Visit coolroofs.org to learn about past award recipients.

The CRRC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization formed in 1998 to develop accurate and credible methods for evaluating and labeling the radiative properties of roofing products and to disseminate the information to all interested parties. In 2019, the CRRC expanded to include the rating of exterior wall products. Please contact the CRRC at [email protected] or (866) 465-2523 for more information on its programs.
