CRRC-1 Standard Becomes an American National Standard for Roofing Products

The Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) is pleased to announce the accreditation of the CRRC-1 Standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The CRRC-1 Standard is now an American National Standard that can be referenced by building codes and rating programs worldwide.

The CRRC-1 Standard is a standard for the measurement of initial and aged solar reflectance and thermal emittance values of roofing products. The Standard was adapted from the CRRC’s Program Manual, and describes sample preparation and test procedures. The Standard helps ensure consistency in preparation and measurement of roofing properties and brings industry test procedures to a new level of reliability.

The CRRC began the process of accreditation in September 2007 by becoming an Accredited Standards Developer with ANSI. ANSI is a distinguished non-profit organization that coordinates the development of voluntary consensus standards through its fair, open, and balanced standards development process. After becoming an Accredited Standards Developer, the CRRC organized a Consensus Body to draft the Standard. The draft was opened to two public comment periods in late 2008 and mid-2009. Following revisions, the Standard was accredited as an American National Standard on December 1, 2010.

The CRRC is committed to maintaining a fair and open process for standards development. The accreditation of the CRRC-1 Standard is part of the CRRC’s mission to implement accurate and credible radiative energy performance ratings for roofing products, as well as to provide education and objective support to interested parties. The CRRC will continue its efforts to advance the industry by working to incorporate the CRRC-1 Standard in building codes and rating programs. The accreditation of the CRRC-1 Standard marks a new chapter for the CRRC and solidifies its position as a key player in the cool roofing industry.
